On March 2, 1971, Korea's first commemorative coins (a total of about 31,000 coins in 12 types: six types of gold coins and six types of silver coins) were issued to promote the country's history and national prestige and to attract visitors from abroad. Historic figures such as King Sejong the Great, Admiral Yi Sun-shin, and national heritage such as Crowns of Silla and Namdaemun Gate were used as the design theme on the obverse of the coin, and the national emblem or the Presidential seal were applied on the reverse. There is not much of the coin left since they were minted and sold abroad due to the lack of domestic minting technology.
