2024 BOK-KDEA Joint SymposiumEconomic Impact of Climate Change and Response, and the Role of the Bank of Korea
Date: Dec. 12 (Thu), 2024, 14:00-17:40
Climate change has evolved beyond a mere environmental concern to become a critical challenge affecting our entire economic and financial system. The research being presented today clearly demonstrates how climate change not only significantly impacts economic growth, price stability, and financial security, but also leads to increased production costs and structural changes across industries.
In this period of transition, climate change poses a substantial challenge to the Bank of Korea's ability to fulfill its mandate, making the central bank's role and policy responses more crucial than ever. The Bank of Korea, in particular, has recently shown proactive leadership by establishing a dedicated division for climate response.
As you may know, the Bank of Korea possesses the nation's finest talent, research capabilities, and extensive accumulated data and statistical expertise. Combined with its institutional independence and long-term perspective, the Bank of Korea has the foundation to play a leading role in managing climate risks and building a sustainable financial ecosystem.
Recognizing this potential, the Korean Development Economics Association has organized this symposium in collaboration with the Bank of Korea to explore and develop ways to effectively utilize these capabilities in addressing both national and global challenges of climate change.
Our association has conducted integrated research across various fields of economic policy. Today, faced with the enormous challenge of climate change response, we aim to contribute to our economy's sustainable growth by facilitating productive and innovative discussions on ways to transform these challenges into opportunities.
