This paper examines the reference-dependent preferences in labor supply decisions using novel data from commercial halibut skippers in Alaska during 2006–07. This data uniquely provides subjective reference points of planned harvest, thus overcoming inherent limitations associated with measurement error of proxy-based reference points in previous studies. Additionally, the unpredictability of groundfish stocks guarantees exogenous variations in catch harvest earnings. The results support the reference-dependent model, finding significant loss aversion estimates. This highlights the importance of considering reference-dependent preferences in policymaking due to their asymmetric impact on the effectiveness of economic incentive schemes upon reaching the reference. I also examine the prevalence of referencedependence among skippers using a mixed logit model.
